Saving the Cinema Experience

We advocate on behalf of the vitally important independent segment of the motion picture industry.

We give independents a voice they otherwise lack on industry issues such as PVOD, shrinking windows and other developments that threaten the survival of independents and the overall health of the motion picture industry.

In cooperation with our studio partners, we promote innovative pro-cinema solutions that bring maximum value to our members.

It is time that our voice as independents, constituting around 20% of North American theatrical box office revenue, become focused and cohesive rather than scattered and disorganized.

Who We Are

The ICA is a not-for-profit, volunteer alliance of independent cinemas operating in communities throughout the United States and Canada. Theatres operated by alliance members range in size from single screen venues in small towns to multiplexes in larger cities and, while many of our members operate just one theatre, others may operate multiple locations across several states. Regardless of our members size, we share one common goal….to collectively provide a public voice that recognizes and promotes the importance of Independent cinemas to a healthy and vibrant motion picture industry.

ICA Leadership

The ICA is currently managed by a task force of independent exhibitors who have volunteered their time and resources to represent alliance members. In addition, to the managing task force there is a steering committee consisting of an additional group of 10 independent exhibitors who provide the task force with direction and guidance on issues of concern.

  • Mission Statement

The Independent Cinema Alliance promotes the preservation and prosperity of independent cinemas as an essential part of a healthy motion picture industry.

  • Preservation

The word “preservation” signifies the existential crisis that independents face: some studio practices threaten the survival of independents and the world of motion pictures would be a deeply lesser place if independents broadly disappeared.

  • Prosperity

The word “prosperity” signifies the importance of a level playing field, a way for independents not merely to survive, but to thrive.

  • Independent

The word “independent” signifies an operator who is local or regional in scope and makes decisions for themselves.

  • Essential

The word “essential” signifies that without independents far fewer people would treat cinemas as their preferred way to see movies and movies would become cheapened and interchangeable entertainment commodities.

  • Healthy Motion Picture Industry

The phrase "healthy motion picture industry" signifies a rational way of delivering our culture's magnificent cinematic stories to the most people possible and promotes the survival of big screen entertainment in venues of all sizes, all while delivering a high perceived value to the consumer.
